Cooler, shorter days, and the changing of the countryside colours can only mean one thing; autumn is upon us. It’s the perfect time of year for bracing coastal walks, pumpkin picking, and enjoying seasonal treats like spiced latte or warm apple cider.
One of East Devon’s most popular seaside towns, Exmouth, has plenty to offer autumn explorers whether you’re a resident or a visitor to its sandy shores. Packed full of independent shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes, there’s plenty of entertainment for adults and children. Read our local guide to discover things to do in Exmouth this autumn half term.
Boots and beach day
Layer up and put your wellington boots on for a walk along Exmouth’s sandy beach. The beach stretches for two miles, making it the perfect place for a stroll. Collect shells, fly kites, or build sandcastles before stopping for a well-earned lunch or afternoon tea at Mickeys Beach Bar and Restaurant.
The beach is dog friendly in the autumn and winter months (long after the summer crowds have dispersed), so there’s no need to leave your canine companions at home this autumn half term.
Visit A la Ronde
A la Ronde has earned a place on every local guide. Built in the 1790s, this striking 16-sided house was the work of cousins Jane and Mary Parminter. This quirky former home has views over the countryside to the Exe estuary and the sea beyond. The house is full of curiosities, shell decorations, and beautiful Georgian architecture, making it an ideal visit for families looking for an historical and enriching indoor activity during the autumn half term.
Wildlife wonderings
Naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts will have plenty of opportunities to see migrating birds and marine life during the autumn half term at Exmouth. Book a boat trip along the Exe Estuary, where you can spot rare birds such as avocets and curlews, or explore the nature reserves with paths taking you through marshlands and past hidden birdwatching spots.
Join a Stuart Line Cruise for a guided bird watching adventure from the waves or take a circular scenic cruise from Exmouth. This family friendly activity should be at the top of your list of things to do in Exmouth. All vessels have seating, refreshments, and toilets on board.
Exmouth Indoor Market
From handmade homeware to delicious locally made treats, Exmouth Indoor Market is a fantastic place to pick up unique souvenirs or start some early Christmas shopping. While away an hour or so browsing the 30 stalls.
Queen’s Drive Space
Have some free, family-friendly fun this autumn half term and discover the Queen’s Drive Space on Exmouth beach. The vast space includes a Jurassic themed playpark with a large sandpit, toddler climbing area, swings, roundabout and a giant model dinosaur (a nod to the area’s prehistoric history). This popular attraction is just a stone’s throw from Mickeys Beach, which is the next (logical) stop if you have hungry mouth’s to feed and chilly hands to warm up!
Pick your own pumpkin
Darts Farm’s second Pumpkin Festival takes place during the autumn half term. Choose your perfect pumpkin from a number of varieties including Harvest Moon, Gladiator, Atlantic Giant, Racer, and Magic Lantern and take it home to carve.
The Pumpkin Festival runs from 20th – 31st October. Head to the gazebo by the Hen House and await instructions. Booking is not required, but the price will vary depending on the size of pumpkins you pick.
Gateway to geological wonders
The gateway to the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, Exmouth boasts a treasure trove of geological marvels waiting to be discovered. Search for fossils at the cliff base or climb to the top and walk the South West Coast Path, taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, indoor entertainment, or just something delicious to eat, there are plenty of things to do in Exmouth during the autumn half term.
